I lived both sides of campus life.
I was a mother and a student at UBC. I knew what it was to choose between attending a study group and being with my child because I didn’t have childcare. I brought my child to class many times. I was part of UBC, but without someone to step in, I couldn’t always take part in UBC.
I also knew how expensive it was to be a student here, starting with the price of a coffee, and how much even a few flexible hours of income could matter.
Neola was built from living both sides of that reality. It gives parents the extra pair of hands I needed, while giving UBC students and affiliates a flexible way to earn.

Who can join Neola at UBC?
UBC students and affiliates can apply to become Neos. UBC-connected parents can join to find the right Neo for their Nenes. If you’re unsure whether your connection qualifies, join the list and we’ll confirm it with you.
What does “UBC affiliation verified” mean?
We confirm every Neo’s connection to UBC before their profile goes live. A UBC email may be part of that process; when it does not confirm current affiliation on its own, we ask for another current UBC document. We never ask for or see your CWL password.
What checks does every Neo complete?
Every Neo completes identity verification and an Enhanced Canadian Criminal Record Check through Certn. Neola also receives two references before the profile can go live.
Are parents verified too?
Yes. Parents verify their identity before their first booking. Neos complete identity verification, the enhanced criminal record check and two references. Trust works both ways.
How does the Certn check work?
After giving consent, the applicant receives a secure link from Certn and completes the required steps directly through its system. Families see that a Neo is verified—not their identity documents or the details of their report.
How long does it take to become verified?
Many Certn checks return within the same day, although some require more time. A Neo’s profile goes live only after their verification, references and Neola’s review are complete.
What happens if a check needs closer review?
A result requiring review is not treated as an automatic rejection. The profile remains offline while the information is reviewed, and the applicant has an opportunity to address anything that may be inaccurate.
Who pays for the checks?
For the first 30 parents, Neola covers identity verification. For the first 30 Neos, Neola covers identity verification and the background check. Any future cost will always be shown before verification begins.

Neola was built by a UBC student and parent, but it is an independent platform and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by UBC.
What is Standing?
Standing is the record every parent and Neo builds through how they show up over time. It isn’t a star rating or one person’s opinion. It reflects the commitments you kept, the affirmations you earned and the word you’ve proven across completed visits.
Accountability works both ways. Parents and Neos both make commitments, both have a voice and both build a Standing. At its heart, Standing is about being a decent human being—and showing it over time. That’s the essence of Neola.
